The transsphenoidal technique for approaching the pituitary gives the most satisfactory surgical results and often allows selective removal of the adenomas (Fig. 4.8). The operating microscope, image intensification (allowing video radiographic monitoring), and the advent of antibiotics (minimising postoperative meningitis) are advances enabling this to be performed.
